Introduction

Ndi igbo, the igbo people as we proudly call ourselves are one of the three largest ethnics
groups in Nigeria besides the Hausas and Yorubas.
Early settlement in Igboland is dated back to about 6,000 years BC and from then on, the
igbos have always believed in the fact that their greatest strength lies in their unity “Igwe
bu ike” and therefore adopted the policy of living, working and harmonising with one
another without leaving anyone behind “Onye aghana Nwanne ya”(Never leave your
brethren behind).
The Igbo tribe, indigenous to the South-eastern part of Nigeria are an ethnic group with
its language belonging to what was referred then as the “Niger-Congo family language
family” with its people well-know for their enterprising, independent and adventurous
nature dominating in the areas of education, commerce and industry.

Ndi igbo are extremely proud of their way of life; Food, dance, music/musical instruments,
festivals and Culture which they usually take along and adapt to anywhere they go to and
that has made their way of life very popular all over the world.
Ndi Igbo also played the most active role in the development of not only Nigeria as a
country but in every community all around the world wherever they find themselves which
invariably sometimes attracts them the hatred of their hosts.

In 1967, an unprovoked attack and massacre of igbos in the Northern/western parts of
Nigeria led the igbos into declaring an independent state of their own called Biafra which
lead to civil war between them and the rest of Nigeria. It was a bitter fought civil war that lasted for 30 months and cost the igbo people well
over 3 million lives the second greatest genocide ever to be committed against an
indigenous ethnic group and their economy that was prior to this civil war was the fourth
fastest growing economy in the world grinding to a halt .

So it´s with this same igbo spirit of Igwe bu ike and Onye aghana nwanne ya that spurred
some resolute and insightful igbo sons and daughters living in Stuttgart and it´s environs
after several attempts to come together and form a meeting that came to be known as
the “Igbo Congress Stuttgart “ in the year 2001 but was officially registered with the
Amtsgericht Stuttgart (District court)on the 21st day of September 2002.
The aim is to enhance peace, unity, protection of our language, tradition and our cultural
values.
Igbo Congress is NOT a political party and have no political inclination.
Igbo Congress is amongst the oldest ,resilient and most formidable igbo union in
Germany .

The first national igbo convention in Germany that laid the foundation stone to the
formation of the present day “Ndi Igbo Germay”(NIG an Umbrella union for all Igbo
unions in Germany) was organised by and held in Stuttgart on 1st October 2011 and has
since its inception played a formidable role in all matters that concerns igbos in Germany
and equally involved in humanitarian works like rendering support to orphanages,
education of the less privileged, NGOs and other community projects in Nigeria.

Meetings and other activities.
A. We usually hold our monthly meetings on every third Saturday of the month.
B. Yearly summer grill party in the summer months of either May,June,July or August as
the weather permits.
C. End of year party being held in December.
D. Membership is open to ALL igbo speaking sons and daughters living within stuttgart

and environs after a completion of the due registration process.
